Elul

Elul is a month of the year in the Jewish calendar.

During Elul we practice the following customs. We visit the cemetery to recall those we love who are no longer with us. While saying the blessing we light festival candles. We say Kiddush over the wine. Saying the blessing, we dip a piece of round challah, or a slice of apple, in honey and say “May it be G-d’s will to renew for us a year that will be good and sweet.” While saying the blessing we eat apples dipped in honey. We listen to the sound of a Shofar and attend services. We send L'Shanah Tovah (Jewish New Year) Cards and wish one another L'Shanah Tovah U’metukah ("May you have a good and sweet year") and "L'Shanah Tovah" ("May you be inscribed for a good year"). At the end of the evening service in synagogue we say to one another, "May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year."
