Hanukkiah

A Hanukkiah is a special kind of menorah used during Hanukkah. The Hanukkiah is a candelabrum which holds nine candles. One candle is added to the Hanukkiah each of the eight nights of Hanukkah. The ninth candle is the Shammash which is lit first and used to light the other candles of the Hanukkiah.

Lighting the Hanukkah Candles

The ceremony of the kindling of the lights is the most significant phase of the Hanukkah Festival so it should be observed in a spirit of reverence and solemnity. Seek to make it beautiful as well as impressive. The entire family should remain standing around the Hanukkiah as the parent lights the Shammash (the "helper" candle used to light the Hanukkah candles). As the Shammash is held aloft, the first blessing over the Hanukkah light is chanted.

On Friday night, light the Hanukkiah before the Shabbat candles. On Saturday night, the Havdallah candle is lit before the Hanukkiah.
